What could have been dated and stale, is a new fresh blown-out production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar. The biblical tale of the last days of Jesus Christ come alive in an engaging and sleek updated staging is the current offering at Signature Theatre’s MAX Theatre until July 2, 2017
The rock-opera score tells the story of Jesus, along with his Apostles, as he is judged and crucified with well-known songs like “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” “What’s the Buzz” and “Everything’s Alright.”
“Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the most iconic musicals in history, and its score changed the sound of Broadway,” said Joe Calarco, Signature’s Director of New Works. “People are so familiar with the show now that I think we forget how arresting and revolutionary it was, not just in the style of its music, but how lyrically it asks us to look at Jesus as a man, a man with faults. This production will continue Signature’s history of allowing audiences to see classics in a fresh way.
The production star’s Nicholas Edwards (as Jesus of Nazareth, Ari McKay Wilford as Judas Iscariot, and Natascia Diaz as Mary Magdalene.
